Fellowship Programme for Adult Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT)

The Adult HSCT Fellowship Programme at the NCIS aims to utilise stem cell transplantation in the treatment of haematologic malignancies. Approximately 80 to 90 adult and paediatric transplants are performed under our Programme annually.

The Programme is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) which recognises that the Programme has met the most rigorous standards in every aspect of stem cell therapy. In addition to the clinical programme, we also have an apheresis and stem cell collection unit, as well as a cell processing laboratory that is crucial to collecting and preparing safe and effective haematologic tissues for transplantation.

The NCIS is one of two nationally recognised centres for post-graduate radiation oncology training. Our Department of Radiation Oncology is also the only site outside Australia or New Zealand accredited with the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR).

The national radiation oncology training programme spans 6 years, and seamlessly integrates basic and advanced specialty training. It also includes one year of selected compulsory postings outside of radiation oncology to increase the trainee’s breadth of learning in our multi-disciplinary clinical setting.

Trainees will gain in-depth knowledge and expertise in pre-clinical subjects including anatomy, medical physics, radiation biology and pathology, as well grasp core and applied knowledge in clinical oncology and radiation oncology.

Our department values a culture of research and will involve the trainee in a range of research activities, including prospective or retrospective clinical research, and some opportunities for translational research. Components of advanced research degrees (e.g. MSc, MCI, PhD) can be incorporated into the training programme, subject to approval.

When is training is completed, candidates will obtain a Fellowship of the RANZCR (Radiation Oncology) after fulfilling the progressive training requirements and passing both the Phase I and II FRANZCR examinations. Trainee development is reviewed regularly with the national Residency Advisory Committee, which will also certify the satisfactory completion of training, allowing the candidate to register as a specialist with the Specialist Accreditation Board.

The Division of Gynaecologic Oncology at the NCIS is committed to training and developing specialists and healthcare professionals equipped to deliver holistic evidence-based care to women living with cancer.  Our philosophy of training is to nurture didactic and skill-sets development in a systematic fashion within an atmosphere of collegiality where our patients and our trainees come first. Our objective is to improve the health of our patients by inculcating in all our trainees the spirit of humanistic evidence-based care.

Student Internship Programme in Gynaecologic Oncology

We believe that a lifelong of service to women living with cancer begins with building sound foundations. This is why the Division of Gynaecologic Oncology created the Student Internship Programme in Gynaecologic Oncology.

This 8-week total immersion programme firmly embeds the 4th year medical student in the team of gynaecologic oncologists, nurse practitioners, specialist trainees and women's mental healthcare professionals that care for women living with cancer. The student functions as an intern on the service by performing the duties of a senior house officer on a sub-specialist rotation. They perform all ward procedures under the supervision of oncology nurse practitioners and are involved in all surgical cases performed by the Division of Gynaecologic Oncology including both subsidised and private cases. The students are also given the responsibility of completing a clinical study, review or audit by the end of the 8-week rotation. They are equipped with the skills for self-directed study with regular assessments of their didactic development and assimilation of level-appropriate gynaecologic oncology. The value of this rotation as a training tool is most evident in the popularity of this highly coveted rotation amongst 4th year medical students who place competitively for the single internship spot.

The division is committed to training generalist obstetrician-gynecologists that are well grounded in the principles of care for women living with cancer. Our trainees have constant exposure to the full spectrum of the care that the Division is called upon to deliver which not only revolves around the care of women living with cancer but includes complex pelvic surgery, surgical and acute care of the sick patient, management of complex postoperative pain and the management of patients with chronic issues such as pain, bowel dysfunction, and lymphedema. The trainees receive dedicated and protected exposure during their subspecialty rotations with the Division of Gynaecologic Oncology; a 3-month and 6-month rotation in their 4th and 5th year of specialist training respectively. The trainees with the Division are involved in all the surgical cases where their didactic and skill sets are tested and evaluated.

Fellows in Gynaecologic Oncology

The Division is committed to raising the standard of care for women living with cancer through the conscientious training and nurturing of subspecialists. The division takes on fellows in gynaecologic oncology for a period of 12 months.

During this training period, fellows are introduced to the pathophysiology of gynaecologic malignancies, the role of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the management of gynaecologic malignancies, palliative medicine and end of life care and the role of mental and psychosocial management in the care of women living with cancer. Fellows are given sound surgical training in advanced gynaecologic and pelvic surgery, basic colorectal surgery and urological surgery.  Finally, Fellows with the Division are expected to be fully engaged in the teaching and training activity of the Division.  Direct proctoring of resident surgical cases and active participation in twice-weekly bedside teaching rounds are examples of how Fellows with the Division train and teach as part of their own Fellowship in Gynaecologic Oncology.

Anatomy of Complications Workshop and the GRACES Surgical Partners Programme

The Division of Gynaecologic Oncology also actively trains other gynaecologic surgeons.  This is done mainly through two flagship training programmes, the Anatomy of Complications Workshop and the GRACES Surgical Partners Programme.

The Anatomy of Complications Workshop is a highly popular 2-day hands-on immersion course in recognising, repairing and avoiding complications of surgery in the pelvis. The course structure includes didactic lectures inanatomy, cadaveric prosection review, wet specimen labs and live animal surgery.  The target audience is any surgeon that operates in the pelvis. Since its inception, this Divisional educational activity has been enthusiastically over-subscribed. The reviews by course participants have been consistently glowing and the scores for content, conduct and clinical utility and relevance high.

Find out more about the Anatomy of Complications Workshop here.

The Surgical Partners Programme is an outreach effort by the Division through its involvement in the Gynaecologic Robot-Assisted Cancer and Endoscopic Surgery (GRACES) programme at NUH. The goal of the programme is to increase accessibility of cutting-edge surgical technology to the women of  Asia who need gynaecologic surgery. The modus operandi is to train, nurture and continually accredit gynaecologic robot-assisted surgical centers all over Asia.

As a centre of excellence in gynaecologic robot-assisted surgery, we realise the limitations of a single centre in providing care to all the women in Asia who require gynaecologic surgery. By providing support in the form of training and network support to motivated, highly skilled gynaecologic surgeons who are interested in the possibilities that this technology can benefit their patients, the Division through GRACES hopes to be able to raise the bar in women's healthcare in Asia.

The NCIS Division of Paediatrics Oncology is part of the the Children Medical Institute, where university teaching staff hold concurrent clinical appointments.

They offer the following training programmes:

  • Healthcare Professionals - Paediatric Oncology Fellowship
  • Healthcare Professionals - Advanced Paediatric Blood/Marrow Transplant Fellowship
