Caregiver Responsibilities

Caregiver Responsibilities

caregiver

A cancer diagnosis is never easy, not just for the patients, but for their caregivers as well. Caregivers are instrumental in the patients' cancer journey and in aiding recovery and rehabilitation as they provide the patient with physical, mental and emotional support. Caregivers may be partners, family members or close friends.

There are many ways to be a caregiver. Caregivers may share the same home as the patient, share responsibilties, or care from a distance. The role of a caregiver varies depending on the situation and tends to change over time.

Caregivers are tasked with a range of responsibilities on a daily, or as-needed basis and these are some of the responsibilities caregivers may take on:

  • Giving medication
  • Offering support and encouragement
  • Managing symptoms and side effects
  • Arranging medical appointments
  • Providing transportation to appointments
  • Preparing meals
  • Assisting with household duties
  • Managing insurance and bills
