Dr George Thomas is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Eye Surgery Centre at the National University Hospital and at Alexandra Hospital. He holds the academic position of Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology at the National University of Singapore.
Dr Thomas has clinical interests in cataract surgery and has sub-specialty training in the management of both medical and surgical retinal diseases. He received the Learning Development Award to pursue further training in the niche field of Ocular Oncology with Dr Carol Shields, a leading ocular oncologist in Philadelphia, United States of America.
He has specific interests in complicated cataract surgery, the use of the latest intraocular lenses and also in retinal surgery including vitrectomy and retinal detachment surgery.
He graduated from the University of Melbourne in Australia, where he was awarded the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists’ Prize in Clinical Ophthalmology. He also attained the R L Simpson Prize Award and Hector MacLean Scholarship in Ophthalmology.
Dr Thomas completed his Ophthalmology specialist training at the National University Hospital, where he received a Gold Medal in the Joint Committee for Specialist Training Examination. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore.
Having served as the Chief Resident at the Department from 2016 to 2017, Dr Thomas graduated from the Residency Leadership Development Programme 2016 to 2017.
In his academic pursuits, Dr Thomas is actively involved in medical student and allied health education. He currently holds positions as a Clinical Teacher and Content Expert, Lee Kong Chian Medical School, and serves on the Clinical Faculty Scheme on the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
He is the co-lead for the Retinal Diseases Program at the Centre for Precision Eye Health at the NUS. He is involved in academic research, and has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He has presented his work at local and international conferences. He served on the organising committee of the Asia Pacific Vitreoretinal Society Meeting 2024 in Singapore.
He speaks English, Malay and simple Mandarin.
