To date, we have conducted numerous educational and outreach programmes to create public awareness of cancer and how to prevent it. Yet, the fight against cancer is only complete with the participation of volunteers who dedicate their time and skills to help patients on their long, strenuous journey to recovery.
Volunteers form an indispensable part of the NCIS family and we are always on the lookout for people who wish to connect with both patients and survivors. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life who have something to share. Just a few hours of your time could make a big difference here.
There are various kinds of volunteer opportunities at the NCIS, and these range from advocacy and awareness events to care and support programmes such as:
Public Education and Community Outreach There are various volunteer opportunities in the regular NCIS organised cancer awareness roadshows and public education activities in the community. At the NCIS, we believe that empowering the public with the right knowledge on cancer prevention and screening will accelerate the efforts in the fight against cancer. |
NCIS Befrienders Programme An initiative by our Nasopharyngeal Cancer (NPC) oneHeart Support Group, this programme targets newly diagnosed head and neck cancer patients and their caregivers and aims to create a supportive and encouraging environment for participants and their Befrienders to chat in private. The Befrienders from the support group volunteer their time to provide support, care, sharing of their own experiences and advice on coping strategies to issues that newly diagnosed head and neck cancer patients and their caregivers face. If you are a cancer survivor or caregiver to a cancer patient and will like to join as a ‘Befriender’, please call 6772 8390 or 6772 8370. |
A new initiative to help NCIS patients with advanced cancers achieve their dreams, this programme aims to improve the quality of lives of patients beyond just clinical care. It will be supported by a group of volunteers comprising of doctors, healthcare professionals, corporate bodies and also ordinary people from all walks of life who are passionate in helping cancer patients achieve their dreams. Other than volunteering to be a “Dream Maker” who is involved in organising and planning to help make our patients’ dreams come true, there are also various other volunteer opportunities for the programme. You can find more information here. |
Generously donated by Cristofori, the baby grand piano is nestled at Level 3 of the NUH Medical Centre, with the objective of resonating classical tunes of hope to visitors and patients of our hospital. It is said that music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything and here at the NCIS, it is our hope that guests at our hospital may be able to find peace, warmth and comfort in the soothing tunes of classical rhapsody. Calling all pianists and musicians! Help us share tunes of hope and positivity by performing for patients and visitors at our NUH Medical Centre! We welcome everyone with a passion for music and spreading hope and love to volunteer your gift of music! |
Patient Supportive Care Programmes At our Health Resource Centre located at the NUH Medical Centre Level 10, we organise various supportive care programmes to help our cancer patients better cope with their disease. One of the programmes helmed by volunteers is the craft workshops for our cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers. In these workshops conducted bi-monthly and during the festive seasons like Christmas and Chinese New Year, volunteers teach our patients, survivors and caregivers on jewellery making and creating simple crafts such as Christmas cards, Chinese New Year lanterns or simple decorative items. |

Kent Ridge Volunteers (KRV) from NUS
KRV's Christmas event allowed me an opportunity to interact not just with cancer patients at NCIS but their caregivers and family members as well. Learning more about their journeys as cancer fighters was touching and inspirational and I'll definitely volunteer again.

Volunteer Performances
KRV's There's always time for music, and I always enjoy the experience. Personally, it's stress relieving as well.
Actually, I really love it (performing). I just grab a quick lunch and rush here to play.
Music is the universal language that connects everyone, regardless of culture, race or religion
