About NCIS

Overview

2024/10/21

The National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) is a national specialist centre under the National University Health System (NUHS). It is the only public cancer centre in Singapore treating both paediatric and adult cancers in one facility.

At the NCIS, Every Person Matters and our goal is to provide comprehensive yet personalised care for each and every patient incorporating cancer awareness, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. We do so by focusing on four core areas:

  • Providing quality patient care
  • Advancing research discoveries from the laboratory into treatments
  • Training healthcare professionals and scientists
  • Educating the public

We provide a broad spectrum of cancer care and management from screening and early diagnosis to treatment and long-term care.

We bring together professionals with various specialties including doctors, surgeons, nurses, medical imaging professionals, pharmacists, and rehabilitative therapists.

With the patient at the heart of all our programmes, sound medical knowledge and sophisticated technology are combined with the human touch of specialist doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals in innovative ways to fight cancer together. We also collaborate cohesively with scientists to advance cancer medicine by translating basic research discoveries in the laboratory to applied research for clinical trials and eventually to actual treatments.

Besides improving the quality of care to cancer patients, we believe in training and nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals in this field of medicine. Many of our clinicians assume dual roles - serving as surgeons as well as physicians while lecturing at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS). This has enabled them to be attuned to medical developments while their advancements in research breaks boundaries to benefit our patients.

Past & Present

Past

What we do - Past

The National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) has come a long way since it was first set up as an ambulatory oncology centre in the National University Hospital (NUH) in September 1988. Prior to that, cancer patients did not have a dedicated centre to receive chemotherapy. Then housed at the dentistry wing of NUH's Main Building, the NUH Oncology Centre soon became the model for other chemotherapy centres in Singapore to emulate.

The NUH Oncology Centre moved to NUH's Kent Ridge Wing in 1996 and another related specialist centre, the Radiotherapy Centre, was opened in 1999.

A year later, these two centres formed The Cancer Institute (TCI), which grew from strength to strength.

Over the years, the Ministry of Health (MOH) noted an increase in the number of patients seeking cancer treatment in Singapore and that a second centre offering tertiary care was warranted. Already a centre of excellence in its own right, the TCI was officially renamed as the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS) in 2008 and assumed the responsibilities as the second national specialty centre for cancer at the Kent Ridge campus.

With the NCIS, patients in Singapore now have more choices for cancer care.

Present

What we do - Present

Today, the NCIS boasts a broad spectrum of substantial capabilities spanning over three floors of the NUH Medical Centre, a 20-storey landmark building providing one-stop holistic and comprehensive care, management and treatment for both adult and paediatric oncology patients.

Housed alongside other outpatient medical specialisations at the Medical Centre, the NCIS brings together the expertise of multiple clinical departments to provide multi-disciplinary cancer care via a convenient and accessible one-stop platform to allow for efficient consultations and treatment processes to be carried out under one roof.

Covering over 13,000 square metres, NCIS provides comprehensive delivery of care and convenience via its dedicated one-stop centre translating into quicker diagnosis and treatment for patients.

Additionally, the NCIS also operates three Oncology Wards (Wards 56, 58 & 8A/8C) located in the Main Building at the NUH Kent Ridge Wing.
